11 plants that are non-toxic for your pets

Pets cannot distinguish between toxic and non-toxic houseplants so it's up to you to make sure that your home is safe for anyone who may fancy a nibble. We've listed below 10 plants that are non-toxic for your pets however it's worth noting that this doesn't mean they won't make them sick. If you find a plant you particularly love, make sure you put it somewhere high up, such as on a shelf or from a hanging planter.



1. Herb gardens


There are plenty of herb plants that are safe for your pets. Basil, dill, sage, lemon balm, rosemary... all of these are safe for your pets. Download the Hedira app and add your herb plants so that you can look after them correctly!


2. Bamboo


Chamaedorea elegans (Miniature Fish Tail Dwarf Palm, Parlor Palm, Good Luck Palm) is non-toxic for cats and dogs.


3. Spider plant


Chlorophytum comosum (Spider plant, Ribbon Plant, Anthericum, Spider Ivy) is marked as safe for pets, however, these plants can attract cats because it is mildly hallucinogenic. Because cats are more likely to play with Spider plants, they are more likely to eat it and therefore suffer from an upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhoea. We would recommend keeping your Spider plant out of the way of cats by hanging it in a basket!



4. Lithops


Lithops (living stones) are non-toxic for your pets. In fact, their structure means that your pets are likely to leave them alone so no spilling of pots...


5. Aluminum Plant


Pilea cadieri (Watermelon Plant) look great and keep your pets safe.


6. Ponytail plant


Beaucarnea recurvata (Elephant-Foot Tree, Pony Tail Plant, Bottle Palm) is safe! We can't guarantee your pets won't want to play with the hanging leaves though...



7. Bird’s Nest Fern


Bird's nest ferns are non-poisonous plants. They are safe for humans, dogs, and cats.


8. Zebra Haworthia


Haworthia fasciatas may look spikey, but they are in fact safe!
